Getting to and around the city of San Miguel de Allende is part of its charm! The town is compact and easy to navigate with most attractions, restaurants, and shops within walking distance. While the cobblestone streets add to the magic, they can be quite uneven so comfortable shoes are a must! For those moments when walking isn’t an option, there are several convenient ways to get around San Miguel de Allende. We’ve put together this guide to make navigating as effortless and enjoyable as possible.

What is the best Airport to fly into? We recommend flying into the Querétaro Airport (QRO). Upon arrival, the city of San Miguel de Allende is about a 1 hour and 15 minute drive.
How do I get to San Miguel de Allende from The Queretaro Airport? The ride takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes into the city of San Miguel de Allende from the Querétaro Airport. As you enter the city, the ride can get a little bumpy due to the cobblestones. If you are prone to car sickness we recommend a larger vehicle or taking the necessary precautions.

Comfort Option: Ubers (~$100 per ride). An excellent choice for groups.

Economy Option: BajioGo Shuttle (~$30 per person). Use code "Christina&Lance 0925" when booking your reservation. After booking, a guide will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel or Airbnb in a shared shuttle van.
What if I want to fly into Mexico City? If you have time to extend your vacation. We highly recommend visiting Mexico City. Christina spent most of her life growing up there and is happy to help with any additional tips or guidance you might need in planning your trip.  Keep in mind the travel time from Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende is approximately 4 hours and the best way to do this is either by bus or private transport.
Do I need a Passport or a visa to travel to Mexico? Yes, U.S. citizens need a valid passport to travel to Mexico. Make sure it’s valid for the duration of your stay, though having 6 months of validity is recommended. If you don’t have a passport, apply as soon as possible since processing can take several weeks. ***You will NOT need a visa just a valid passport***

Pack for the Weather: San Miguel de Allende enjoys warm days and cooler evenings, especially in September. Bring layers, comfortable shoes for walking on cobblestone streets, and sunscreen for daytime adventures.
Altitude Awareness: At about 6,300 feet above sea level, the altitude can affect some travelers. If you’re prone to altitude sickness or take regular medications, consult your doctor beforehand. Pharmacies are readily available, but it’s wise to ensure any prescription medication complies with travel regulations.
Currency and Payments: While many places accept credit cards, small shops, markets, and tips often require cash. Have some pesos on hand and notify your bank of your travel dates to avoid any card issues or fees. ATMs are widely available for withdrawals, with several bank options located near the Parroquia.
Explore on Foot: The best way to enjoy San Miguel’s narrow, cobblestone streets and colorful alleys is by walking. Wear comfortable shoes and take your time to discover the city’s hidden gems around every corner.

Christina's favorite local shoe store offers stylish, locally made footwear—perfect for walking.
Safety: San Miguel is considered safe for tourists, but it’s always a good idea to stay alert and keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded places or at night.
Electrical Outlets/ voltage: Mexico uses the same outlets/ plugs as the United States. There is no need to pack any travel adaptors as all of your devices and electronics will work perfectly fine in Mexico.
Transportation Tips: While taxis, Ubers and private drivers are available, walking is often the easiest way to get around.
Respect the Local Culture: As a UNESCO World Heritage site, San Miguel has a rich cultural history. Please be mindful of local customs, especially in churches and historical sites. Always ask before taking photos in private or sensitive areas.
Stay Hydrated and Be Cautious with Food: Stick to bottled water and avoid tap water or ice to prevent stomach issues. Restaurants provide safe drinking water and ice, and the local cuisine is delicious, so dive in!
Immerse Yourself in the Art Scene: From galleries to art markets, San Miguel is an artist’s haven. Explore local handcrafted goods and leave room in your suitcase for unique souvenirs!
Rooftop views: Many of San Miguel’s best restaurants and bars feature incredible rooftop terraces. Be prepared to climb stairs, as elevators are rare—but the views are always worth it!
Pharmacies & Convenience Stores: Pharmacies and convenience stores like OXXO are common throughout the city and stock everything from over-the-counter remedies to personal care items as well as snacks and bottled water.
Cell Phones and Communication: Check with your cellphone provider if Mexico is included in your plan coverage (it often is). If not, SIM cards are always available at the airport for data plans. Also, most businesses offer free Wi-Fi on site.
Helpful Spanish Phrases Even though many locals speak English, learning a few basic Spanish phrases can go a long way,  enhance your experience, and will be appreciated by the locals.
